The Knitting Experience Blog Archive February 2008

Death in verse

I signed up for a sock war,
Not knowing what to do.
"C'mon, join up, and try it,"
cried the 'sockies.' (Oh THEY knew).

So armed with yarn and needles,
And some lessons (one or two),
I cast on all my stitches,
And prayed I'd make it through.

I knitted thru the zig-zags,
And turned the heel to strive,
For the glory - a beginner!
A week!  I'm still alive!!

Two weeks flew by and there at last,
I learned to close a toe.
Cast on the next, begin again -
I wish I weren't so slow!

My stitches had stopped twisting,
And the length began to grow,
When suddenly on Thursday,
Came the quick and silent blow.

"This can't be!"  I filled with dread.
"By now I've been forgotten.
I'm on a roll, I'm speeding up-
I'm done?  Well that's just rotten."

It's not so bad, this state of 'death,'
They're soft, my favorite shade.
They fit like gloves and show the skill,
Of the knitter by whom they were made.

My 'estate' has been entailed away.
I hope they find their end.
And fear not you assassins -
I'll be back to knit again!!

Last rites - Thursday, February 21 at 7:52PM.

Thank you Pam, for sending in such a lovely poem.  I hear that the socks and their packaging are truly killer. (Ha, ha, - cracking myself up here.) Pam promises to bring them by the shop so I can get a picture.

Jennifer also sent in details of her demise at the hands of Caitlin.

"As I approached my door last night, a feeling of dread washed over me when I discovered that my mailman had to prop a shovel up against my door to keep the killer package contained!
DSCN1187
....and I could see why.  The blood-red socks were crawling out of the package to attack me; apparently they interpreted the authorities' Wanted poster about the Mad Knitter as meaning "Wanted Dead or Alive!"  I was dead before I even made it through the door....
DSCN1188
...and yet, how could I be sad, with a lovely pair of red socks (which reminded me that my beloved Red Sox start playing very soon!) and an adorable Della Q project bag to comfort me!
(not to mention a couple of very entertaining poems from my multi-talented ASSOXIN)"
DSCN1186
The amazing Caitlin whipped out these socks in just a couple days.  She had no socks from which to start because Jennifer's original assassin had "misfired" and sent Jennifer's original death to the wrong address.  That meant Jennifer survived  - until Caitlin came along.

"Roses are red, violets are blue,
I'm still in this  race and after you.
My next victim was saved by a knitter's remiss,
who sent my next socks to who know's address.
Be careful, dear knitters, my pain's not yet bad
My fingers are blistered but this war's not yet had."

Beware - Caitlin is still armed with needles, and considered very dangerous!

A fiber fest

I know, I know, you want the death toll.  But, I'm gonna make you wait a little bit.  Two reported deaths have come in, Pam and Jennifer were struck down - both with socks and poetry!  However, the full accounts have yet to arrive at Battle Command Central.

Instead, lets talk about the SPA weekend!

I had the most wonderful time, met incredibly talented people, bought TONS of fiber, and even found a few new and very cool things for the shop.

More than anything, though, I was struck yet again, by our own amazing community. Not only does your creativity take my breath away, but you all really know how to party! Thanks for a great weekend.

It has taken me the past few days to recover and get caught up with work.  Now, the kids are in bed, I have a little time to myself, the wheel is free, and there is some Angora/Merino/Silk fiber calling my name.

Ahhhhhh...

Rogue strikes again

Yes, it's true.  Sensing that we had hit a bit of a lull in the officially-sanctioned battle activity, our good friend The Rogue Knitter has been busy, and spent the weekend killing not one, but two more members of the power structure of this game.

First, Chesley opened the shop Saturday morning and discovered a pair of Killer Zaps left on the flagpole for Peter.  Now normally, one would think that a delivery at the store would not be an effective way of taking him out; his appearance at the shop is irregular and unpredictable.  As fate would have it, however, he was covering the shop for a short time Saturday afternoon, so the delivery was completed, and he was cut down.

Sadly, Alec came to the shop with Peter that day, so the death took place in his presence.  Fortunately, he was busy standing on his head and watching Bunnytown on the iPod, so the emotional scarring seems to have been kept to a minimum.

Why Peter, you ask.  He was not a judge.  He certainly did not understand the knitting aspects of the game (while some of us examined the socks for fiber and technique, his entire analysis of the socks consisted of "Mmmm.  Comfy.").  Rogue's note gives a hint to the devious reasoning behind the hit:

"Peter,

You have been assassinated with a pair of Electric Zap killer socks.  Since you are in charge of all things technical and electronic, it is only fitting that your demise comes in an electric yellow zap.

Sincerely,

The Rogue Knitter"

By seeking to remove the technical support from the game, Rogue is clearly looking to destabilize the entire thing.  A clever move.  Fortunately, the systems Peter had put in place largely run themselves, so his continued presence, while missed, is not required.

pastedgraphic-15_textmedium

In a move much closer to the core of the game, word reached us from the SPA weekend in Freeport that Amy, the mastermind behind the pattern for the Zaps themselves, was also taken out by Rogue.

pastedgraphic-16_textmediumIMG_1236

We imagine that Rogue is relishing the irony of Amy's demise coming from a killing object of her own design.  That, combined with the sheer audacity of an anonymous in-person kill, in a very public place, provides us with some interesting personality traits to add to our profile of The Rogue Knitter.

Yes, while we know that there is rampant speculation as to Rogue's alter ego, no one is more curious than we are, and we are compiling all of our information to identify our wayward assassin.  Do we know who it is yet?  We do not.  Do we have information?  We do.

We are assuming Rogue is a Maine knitter - we doubt one of our Missouri friends is making personal deliveries to the shop.

We have analyzed Rogue's knitting technique - Peter's socks show a very nice three needle bind-off.

We have determined that Rogue's death notices are using a font called Synchro, a retro, non-standard font, which puzzled us for a while.  We then discovered that it was a font which can be installed as a part of iDVD, so is Rogue a Mac user?  Intriguing.

We know that Rogue, despite the killer tendencies, is also very considerate; the taunting letters included with the kills also include a pleasant P.S. with washing instructions.

So the dossier is growing.  We are on the trail.

We apologize for the lack of updates on the official battle.  With relatively few people left, we don't have the same frenzied activity we saw earlier on.  We think that many of the remaining players are on similar stages of death-delivery, so we expect that the end will be brought closer with a flurry of activity.

We reported last time that there were 11 left alive.  We regret to say that we were a bit premature in our counting and included one person who has not actually died yet, so the official count at the moment remains at 12.

We do, however, know of at least 2 deliveries which are on the way, so we should be below a dozen come tomorrow.  And there are likely others on their way, so we should see some more action shortly.

We would remind you that we will only report deaths when they are officially acknowledged by the recipient, so be sure to let us know when death actually arrives for you...

In the comments from the last post, the suggestion was made that at the end of this we provide details around the paths taken by all of the socks in the game.  We find this suggestion to be a good one, and will work on something to deliver at the end of the game.

Until next time...

No pictures =-(

You've been begging for an update.  Who is dead?  Who is still alive and knitting?  Where are the sock pictures?

An update you shall have, but alas, no pictures.  In their knitting/killing/dying frenzy, no one has sent me pictures since the last update!!

I'm putting out a plea... please send me pictures! Actually, how about this, whoever sends me the most creative picture related to the game gets a set of Lantern Moon Rosewood Sox Stixs.  That's right.  For a little creativity on your part, you could have these yummy needles all to yourself.  And even our dear departed players can participate.  The picture just has to be related to the game somehow.  Send me your picture(s) by next friday, Feb. 29 to be eligible for the prize.

Onto the most recent killings...

Caitlin has struck down her third player when Julie opened the socks of death.

Gretchen died at hands of Danielle, who forgot to take pictures of her creativity.  Danielle wrote that she " included a decapitated flamingo with a note made with newspaper clipped letters that read "Mr. Flamingo sleeps with the fishes".

Susan died at hands of Sheryl.  Susan does promise pictures when her camera battery is recharged.  But, she describes her death: "Well it finally came and it was a very quite death.  There sitting on my table by the door was a express mail box, just waiting for me to come home (6:45 pm).  So I open the box and there was a lovely pair of green socks."

11 players remain.

If you have died and still have socks-in-progress in your possession, please make sure you pass them along to your assassin as soon as possible.

And don't forget pictures.  Think of the needles... the lovely needles... they could be yours...

Fabulous February SALE

It's time to celebrate! The Battle of the Soxes is in full swing, SPA weekend is about to start, clearly this calls for a party OR a SALE.  From now until the end of February, all in-stock items will be 20% OFF both in the shop and through the online store.  This includes - yarn, books, patterns, needles, and accessories.

Have fun shopping!

We're down to 15

Things are getting closer and closer here.  The past couple of days have brought us news of more deaths.

Esta thought that staying on the run might keep her safe, but her assassin, in quite the feat of prowess, managed to deliver a kill on the interstate.  Esta writes:

"Tonight (Friday, Feb 15th) at 5:58 pm I was killed while driving home on I-84 in Northern CT from a weeklong business trip. My poor husband had to deliver the kill over the phone.

A lovely pair of blue bamboo socks keep my now dead, chilled toes warm. As you can see from the photo one of my dogs was quite concerned about my lying on the floor dead with just my socks showing any interest to her."
2003_0112killersocks0004

We also had no idea that our little game had attracted much outside attention, but judging by the newspaper article enclosed with Esta's socks, the police are closing in on some of our more notorious killers.

These particular socks were particularly well-traveled.  They were finally completed by Jennifer, the 5th player to possess them - although they usually arrived at each destination shortly after the recipient was herself killed, so were sent on without any additional knitting.

Cheryl also wrote in to describe the emotional roller coaster that can accompany a trip to the mailbox these days:

"E-gad; so sad. I'm dead. I'm dead. I'm dead.
But I've received some beautiful sox, so no tears from this head!

When Bill and I retrieved our mail (at precisely 1:13 pm on Saturday, Feb 16th) there was a good-sized parcel stuffed tightly into the end of our roadside mailbox. Bill said "Looks like you've been assassinated, Hon." But no ... I was still safe! It was the sox that Bethany was working on when I so boldly did HER in. I breathed a sigh of relief, then gasped as the dagger of death struck my very toes. There was a second package in the mailbox. One of our friendly death-doers from MO (Gretchen) had done me in with a beautiful pair of burgundy malabrigo killer zaps. Nestled within was "The Face of Death" ... and thus I humbly succumb to destiny.

I leave behind a very understanding hubby, four sons and 5 grandchildren and fly aloft to that Great Yarn Shop in the Sky."

And finally, news reached us last night of the death of our most distant assassin, Larkin Small at the hands of Helen from MO:

"Vintage death awaited Ms. Small of Berkeley, CA today in the form of a wool-blend pair of socks.  Their color was baby blue.
The package was opened at 3:30 this afternoon, at which point, Ms. Small departed this world.
Her death came as a shock to her, untouched as she had been for 16 whole days."

Ah yes, one never knows just when the final blow will come.  We are not sure which is worse - the quick deaths some people suffered, or these lingering ones, with two weeks of stress-filled trips to the mailbox... .

Going back in time a bit, we want to share with you the poem that Wendy sent to accompany the socks that took out Betsey:

"Roses are red

Violets are blue

This Southern Belle is coming for you.

The socks have been knitted

And sent on their way

The South has risen once again today.

Put down your needles

Forget about your socks

You’ve been assassinated

Because the South rocks.

I’m taking you down

There’s nowhere to run

But knitting these socks has been quite fun.

I hope you’ve enjoyed my short little rhyme

Perhaps we will meet again at some other time.

Sangria (socks) and Southern Comfort (foods that is) to soothe the pain

I hope you’ve had fun playing the game."

Wendy “Wendella – The Needle Master”

Thanks for sharing Wendy!

And now, time for some news from the shop. You may be wondering, what the heck is Chesley knitting while we're all killing each other with these socks?

Well, I'm working on a pair of Killer Zaps that will ultimately go to the winner.

IMG_3130

I decided that it was only fitting that I use a Spunky Eclectic yarn for Amy's pattern, plus it gave me an excuse to play with Spunky Shine, a merino/tencel blend.  I love it.  It is so pretty.  I am going to have a very hard time giving these socks up.  In fact, I'm already plotting my next pair all for me.

We got the online store updated and you'll find Spunky Shine, the Spunky Color of the Month (15% off)-Walking on the Sun in Super Nova-, Trekking, and Kid Seta all available with lovely pictures taken with the help of my two assistants.

IMG_3133

I finally blocked the Airy Wrap that Becka made from Fitted Knits using Classic Elite Miracle. Isn't it gorgeous?  She is letting me use it as a store sample for a little while.

IMG_3137

More of the popular ball winders arrived and we'll now be carrying these swifts:

IMG_3139

Our first shipment of the umbrella swifts sold out in 24 hours, but we'll be getting more soon.

Anna surprised me with the most adorable store sample -

IMG_3165IMG_3166

The pattern is Saartje's Booties and Anna knit them with Debbie Bliss baby cashmerino. Thank you Anna!!

Others have been knitting as well.  Edie created this cuddly collection for her first granddaughter who is expected to arrive in the next few weeks.

IMG_3134

Today, Edie was working on a Felted Hedgehog.  What a lucky baby!

Jane showed off her luxurious felted mittens.  She held two strands of Noro Kochoran together and the result is just incredible.  They are so soft and it would be impossible for your hands to get cold while wearing them.

IMG_3136

Sarah was trying out the Kid Seta in a beautiful lace scarf.  We told her she could knit lace!

IMG_3135

Thanks for the great weekend everyone!

Happy Valentine's Day

Before I get into the sock carnage of the past few days, I want to wish all my lovely fiber friends a wonderful Valentine's Day. You make my world so much brighter.  Thank you for being such incredible people.

While I had planned on holding Knit at Night tonight, my family has other plans.  Namely, the flu. The boys have all come down with raging fevers, so we'll be staying home, drinking OJ, and I'll be cleaning EVERYTHING. So Knit at Night is cancelled today.  We'll be back in full party mode next Thursday night.

And now for the Battle of the Soxes update.  It has been a gory few days.

As mentioned previously, dear, sweet Mara is dead.  Turns out that spending so much time next door to a yarn shop as caused her to bleed yarn.

I Bleed YarnThe Socks

Sharon from Missouri got quite a surprise when she was Attacked by The Killer Tomatoes.

DSC01079

Mindy discovered a gruesome tomato growing in her basement. It sought out the socks and hungrily demanded to be sent to Sharon.

IMG_0199IMG_0201

IMG_0206

Poor Sharon!

This news comes from Pam of Missouri:

"So, today around 11:00  I was at the knitting store when I received the 'dreaded' call from my 14 year old daughter. " Mom," she said, " you're dead, and these are the most beaUTIFUL socks in the world......... and they fit me!"

I arrived home to find some amazingly perfect, deep green beauties......................... and a note that said "BANG! you're DEAD!!"  (such an unhappy note should not accompany such fabulous socks............but nevertheless.............)
I also pried the socks from my daughters feet (I will probably have to hide them)......

One side note
I was so delighted to see that my socks were from Nancy (in Bath)..... it just so happens that I was just looking for some rental property in Bath for vacation next summer..................
AND, I am such a fan of Maine that Lisa forbid me to wear my Maine sweatshirt in her shop......at least while we are warring :)
This was fun! Hope to meet you guys some day!"
101_8352
We'd love to meet you too!  (Great shirt!!)

18 players remain.  Many pairs of socks are in the mail, either heading towards unsuspecting victims, or to a new assassin.

What will today's mail bring?

What a way to die

If you have die, why not go out with beautiful socks, and this:

dsc01285_textmediumdsc01290_textmedium

That's how Wendy took out Betsey.  We hear an obit is being composed and will be shared later.

Cheryl - like any proper assassin - wanted to be sure to finish the job.  Rather than pack extra socks, she lined the box with a little Hemlock and a recipe.

assassinatedbysocks_002_textmedium

"Dear Bethany,

In case these sox don't kill you,
The hemlock surely will.
Just mince it fine in water
And run it thru your still.
(Kidding! Please don't eat or drink it!!!!)

I hope I've killed you gently,
and these sox will chase the chill.
Maybe with your toes warm
You'll bear me no ill will.

Please don't take it personal.
It's just a game, you see.
Sure hope you like these special sox
Made just for you....by me.

Hope to meet you someday!
Sincerely,
Cheryl"

Beth did not imbibe the hemlock, but the socks were too tempting.
assassinatedbysocks_004_textmedium
Beth asked that her obit read:

"Bethany Drolet, went to join her comrades in Sock Heaven at 11:01am on Tuesday, February 12th.  She was a loving wife and mother, happy knitting prodigy, and faithful friend.  She is survived by her husband, Roger and their 4 year old son Xander.  They are happy that her feet are warm though.  R.I.P."

Esta completed her second kill of the game when Emily opened these patriotic socks.

img_1212_textmediumimg_1214-2_textmedium
The socks were begun by Lizzie, finished and em"BELL"ished by Esta.

Mara and Wendy both report their deaths.  At this time we have no pictures to share, but stay tuned.

And it shall be quite interesting to watch the updates from Jennifer. She just received the socks in progress intended for her next victim. Thus far, they have been in 4 different knitters' hands.  Jennifer is the 5th.  Could you be the target?

Stay warm and safe everyone.  Maine is expecting a wicked storm tonight and tomorrow.  Our good friends in Missouri just had an awful ice storm.  Make some tea, wrap a blanket around yourself, and knit.

The weekend's death total

As predicted, it has been a busy weekend, with 6 more joining the ranks of the deceased.

Amy Mattson wrote this cheery note regarding her demise:

"Hello Chesley, or the person now in charge of things,
I am pleased to announce that my death has arrived.  It is quite heavenly and the only thing that could have made it better was for it to have arrived sooner, like before the second pair of socks were mostly knit.  I was waging my own war with a cold and feeling a need to nap. Having finished the leg on the second sock on the second pair of battle socks, I felt rather secure with where things stood and decided to succumb to the cold and the nap.  It was only about 45 minutes later (2:45 to be exact) that I heard the doorbell ring.  Thinking it was just the kids in the neighborhood it took me a drowsy mintue to figure out what my son meant when he came to tell me, "sorry to have to tell you mom, but you're dead."  He seemed to enjoy it a bit too much.  Ah well, I have comfy BEAUTIFUL feet and chocolate, which I must go hide now before my 4 year old wakes up!!  And I don't have to finish the second sock!!
Sincerely,
Amy Mattson"

We are glad you are enjoying the afterlife, but we'll never reveal who is in charge. Ahahahahahahaha

Peggy, of Missouri, reports that a killer pair of socks from Emily awaited her when she returned home from a day of shopping. We shall miss you Peggy!

Peggy is joined in death by her fellow MO knitter, Rhonda, who was taken out by Debra.

But...

In an amazing turn of events, Debra was also struck down- but by Pam. Debra's official notice reads:

"Time of Death:11:27, Feb. 9, 2008

Cause of Death: Spunky Sport Hot Rod

Victim: Debra Foster age 45, who leaves behind a husband David, Jr. of 22 years, three beautiful daughters, Megan aged 17, Ara 14 and Delaney 8, and several nieces and nephews.

She has two WIP and leaves her stash to be divided between Tracy R. and Jen B."

Another MO warrior fell to the swift knitting hands of a Maine player.

"Just as Elphaba the Wicked Witch of the West was killed by a house, so was Sally killed today by a pair of Wicked Battle Socks knit by her new friend Sara.  "Ding, Dong, You're Dead"  was what I encountered once I opened the envelope.  Gingerly opening the rest of the package, I came upon the most beautiful slime green and black socks - Elphaba would be proud to wear them and so am I!  Sara, you are a Wiz!"

Sally found the following package addressed to her from Sara.
2244793213_ff27450efa2245587400_40871d3d96
2244793185_08b820406c2245587472_4cca1ab5352245587448_0c46fe4ab1
Sally carried no grudge to the grave, instead she nominated Sara for a most creative award.

Sandy, who took Bridget out in a stealth kill that the victim never saw coming, was killed herself by Carrie Lee of Maryland.

The socks that Sandy received were particularly special for the story behind them.  Carrie Lee wrote:

"I made them with 3 strands of lace weight knit together.  A friend is teaching me to dye yarn and I made a couple of batches to make items for a good friend of mine.  I made a solid pink and the yarn I used for the socks were shades of pink, some lavender and a little fuchsia.  My friend is currently battling breast cancer.  She is undergoing chemo right now to shrink the tumor enough for a lumpectomy vs. a full mastectomy.  Anyway, I named the yarn Debi in her honor.  So Sandi got a pair of "Debi socks"."

debi_socks_textmediumsandys_socks
We can't think of a better story.  Carrie Lee sent pictures of her friend Debi getting her hair shaved, but due to some linked text, we weren't able to post it here.  We're sending Deb lots of positive healing thoughts.

21 players are now dead
25 remain

Are you the next to go?

Changing of the guard

We are certain that many of you have come here expecting to see continued posts from Chesley.

Despite the brilliantly unexpected attack yesterday morning that strove to remove her from the Battle of the Soxes picture, Chesley confidently proclaimed that her powers extended beyond the grave, and she would continue to be able to control the game.

Alas, we received word from her house last night that the moment she removed her socks, the remainder of her power ebbed away.  So, Rogue, if that is truly your name (and we have our doubts), your task has finally been accomplished.  And for that, we applaud your ingenuity.  We applaud your boldness.

But we cannot applaud your understanding of the power structure of this game.  Did you really think that removing Chesley would bring us to our knees?  She was but the public face of this entire shadowy enterprise.  We are a resilient organization, with redundancies designed to withstand even the most determined efforts to wreak havoc.

We will admit that we did not expect to see Chesley taken out by a sweater.  And we do not like having to expose ourselves in this manner, so to that extent, you have dealt us a blow, Rogue.  But we have overcome that momentary lapse of control, and meanwhile, the carnage we have set in motion continues.

We have reports tonight of two more deaths.  This afternoon, one of the Maine contingent was brought down by one of our Missouri friends.  Barbara sent along a heartfelt "SOB!" to announce that she had become Sally's first victim.

And Dead Deb writes in to report that she is "laying in rest with feet warmed by Terrible Terri."

pastedgraphic-11_textmedium

Now for those of you paying attention, you will recall that prior to her death, Deb had killed Liz.  Liz had already killed Christine, and had received the socks-in-progress from her.

Liz had to pass those back to Deb, who in fact received them the same day that she received from Terri the socks that killed her.  So Deb is sending the socks originally started by Christine back to Terri.

But wait!  You will also note that the same day, we reported that Terri, too, had already been killed.  So she will have to pass the socks back to her killer, Jennifer.

This is but one example of the organized chaos which will only grow as the circle continues to tighten.  There are other such pockets of frantic activity, and we are pleased by it.  Those remaining alive should be pleased by it as well, because it may well be that the socks destined for you are the ones making their way back to your assassin.  As long as they are traveling, you have time to be knitting, working your way onward.  So never despair.  There are too many variables in this game to ever cease your efforts.

To date, then, we have confirmed reports of 15 deaths, so there are 31 still alive, however temporarily.  We know of at least 6 more Killer Zaps which are on their way, so we expect plenty of activity over the next several days.  We remind you to notify us as soon as you receive the instruments of your doom.  There are anxious assassins awaiting affirmation of their efforts, and we don't want to disappoint them.

-TKE

I've been hit!

I've been hit!

The package lay tucked in the arm of the flagpole.  Curious, I thought, as I opened the shop.  Clearly, someone must be trying to pass along some unfinished socks to a new assassin.  Or even hoping to make a kill on a regular Thursday knitter.

But, I had a sense something just wasn't right.  The note inside the beautiful socks said it all,

"Chesley,

One of your knitterly assassins has turned Rogue, Jason Bourne style. I will be taking down each of you who have trained and controlled us knitting assassins.  You think you can control us, you think you can just send us our targets, and we will take them down no questions asked? Well, no more! This time it is you who has been killed.  One of your minions has turned on you, and I wanted you to know the warm footed death that we have been dishing out to one another on your behest.  Let this be a warning to all those who have been in cahoots with the dear commander here, I am coming for you as well!

Chesley, you have been assassinated with a pair of Killer Zap socks.

Sincerely,

The Rogue Knitter"

IMG_3077

The warm footed death is actually kinda nice.  But, my powers aren't that easily extinguished. They reach out from beyond the grave.  My cohorts are still alive and spread around the world.  Some with extremely large feet.  Ah, ha ha ha ha ha.

Killer on the loose

Killer on the loose

BEEEEP!  BEEEEEP!

This is not a test.  I repeat this is not a test.

The Emergency Battle of the Soxes System has issued the following alert:

Tonight, shortly before 6pm, a vicious killer struck at the home of Bridget.  With a pair of socks and a haiku, Sandy eliminated Bridget from the game. But, the knitting public beware!  Bridget had already finished her Killer Zap! socks and was forced to immediately had them over to Sandy.  Sandy is considered armed and dangerous.  I repeat, she is armed with a pair of fully knit socks. If you see her, well, our condolences.

2247692840_d9b90232122247692910_3ddaa86664_m

Bridget's tombstone reads:

"Bridget Gordan’s body lies a-mouldering in the grave,

A-mouldering in the grave,

Bridget Gordan’s body lies a-mouldering in the grave,

But her socks go marching on!"

Last evening, another Mainer fell. We received this report:

"To Whom it May Concern,

As coroner, I must aver, I thoroughly examined her and
she's not only MERELY dead, she's really most SINCERELY
dead!

Dr. Elizabeth "Lizzie" Linnell died this evening, 2/5/08
at 7:45 pm. Cause of death: a beautifully em-BELL-ished
and oh so comfortable pair of hand knit socks. As she
drifted away into that peaceful slumber of death she was
heard to nominate her assasin, Esta Campbell of
Massachussetts, for most creative em-BELL-ishment of the
socks. Her last words were "I wouldn't dream of getting
rid of the bells - they are my FAVORITE part!".

I have enclosed photographic evidence from the crime
scene, including a close-up of the aforementioned bells.

Sincerely,

Soc K. Less,
Coroner of Maine"
embellished socks
Esta sent along a picture of the socks pre-kill.  Notice the take-out container since she was about to "take out" Liz.

Susan also met her fate at the hands of Mara. A beautiful, yet deadly pair of socks awaited her at home.

The newswires brought the following sad news today:

"At 11:43am on February 6, 2008, Lesley L. of Maine succumbed to the effects of the rabid knitting that has already taken out several of her fellow knitter friends. She was grateful to have lasted as long as she did, and does feel a sense of relief after expecting this for several days.

She was not prepared, however, for the ‘face of death’ visual that accompanied her socks. The socks were pretty. Death? Not so much."

The socks could be seen on the victim when police arrived, as the face of death watched over the scene. Gretchen from Missouri is being sought by authorities for questioning.

Diana fell next. Her killer tried to hide behind a carefully crafted note, but the very fact that the words were comprised entirely from letters taken off yarn labels meant it could only be one knitter.

"Knowing that my PO Box Fee was late and being the honest person I am (k, you can get up off the floor from laughing) I trekked my way to the Post Office. I opened the Box and, low and behold, what did I find but a PAST DUE notice for my Box. I rang the bell to alert them I was there to pay my Fee and collect my mail.

The Postmaster set my mail on the counter and what do I see, not 1 but 2 packages both addressed to me. The 1st one was from my “lovely KILLER” Ms. Patti Waters(no wonder she was asking if I would be at KAN on Thursday as we were leaving El Camino on Saturday). Sneaky, very sneaky and yes I did start to wonder!!! The second package was from my “victim” Teresa Lessard and we all know what is in that package but since I “Met My Maker” the task of finishing her “victims” socks is no longer mine, I am sorry to say.

My consolation in this whole thing is threefold: My “victim” is dead, my “assasin” is dead(who just happens to be among the “elite” when it comes to sock knitting speed and talent) and I have warm feet.

I can now join my fellow “dead” in sock heaven, but will not be partaking of Margaritas but will definately be enjoying plenty of Mojitos.

Please let Patti know my feet Thank Her! My advice to those of you still alive and knitting: WATCH YOUR BACKS!!!"

13 are dead.  33 remain.  Who will be next?

With the battle going on, it is hard to remember that knitting continues on the homefront.

Rachael finished the most beautiful bag out of Soft Linen.

Mary completed a gorgeous entrelac felted bag.  The pattern is from Bags: A Knitters Dozen and the yarn is Cascade 220.

These skeins (15% OFF for the month of February) never last long.

UPS brought a very special treat from Blue Sky Alpacas.  Ever want to see what heaven feels like? Just touch the Royal Alpaca. 288yds of pure heaven.

I showed it to Becka this afternoon and she went home with a skein. I don't think she knows what she is going to do with it yet, but she just had to have it.

New tote bags for all your knitting stuff - and so you can look oh-so-cool around town:

New books, including the Field Guide to Knitting, the coolest pocket reference to cable, lace, knit, and purl patterns.  To make it even better, Sara knit a swatch for the book!  Yay Sara!

I restocked books that just keep flying off the shelf:

I didn't get a chance to take pictures of our newest sock yarn: Shine from Spunky Eclectic. It is a merino/tencel blend and is simply lovely. I'm using a skein to make the winner's socks.

Rest in peace all who passed today.  Sleep well, everyone else, for who knows what tomorrow will bring. (Hopefully not Sandy, or you are in big trouble.)

Today we mourn

the passing of 5 noble knitting warriors.

Last night at 9:45pm, Liz and her accomplice Kim - a seasoned killer - struck at the home of Christine.  I will let her tell the story:

"I heard the doorbell ring, looked at my husband, and yelled, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" at the front door, so loudly I'm surprised I didn't wake my daughter up.  But it was no use - they were standin' there giggling and shivering and packin' heat (in the form of socks).  So I let 'em in, and they killed me.  Pictures were taken, hilarity ensued, socks-in-progress were graciously (almost eagerly) handed over, still on the needles.

In any event, my husband now knows there are at least two other crazy knitters in Maine.  And I disproved his conspiracy theory -- he suggested that this would be a great way for a group of people to get one unsuspecting fool (me) to knit them all socks."

Liz got away with the new pair of socks and these fun pictures.

Then, the knitting gods of war decided to even the score.  Kim went down at 12:20pm when FedEx knocked on her door with a package from Sharon.

Teresa reports her death with such vivid detail, you can feel the fear:

"It’s true … I too have fallen victim to an unseen assassin.  It happened late yesterday afternoon … February 4th at 5:48 pm to be exact …

I knew from the beginning that I was a marked woman … I thought that I would be “safe” for maybe a week … or at least a couple more days.  It was a day like any other day (except for the target on my back).  I had battled hard over the weekend and although I hadn’t made the advances I had hoped I felt as though I were still holding my own.  That changed … oh, how that changed.  I had worked late and was anxious to be home to once again pick up my weapons of choice.  I decided that I should probably go to the post office hoping that they would still be open (secretly hoping they had closed for the day).

I pulled up out front.  The place was deserted.  Was it even open I wondered?  Maybe I should just drive off?  It was eerie … I felt this unshakable urge to check my box.  I shut the car off and took a deep breath.  I checked the rearview mirror and the sidewalks ... all was clear.  I opened the car door and went up the steps.  Looking through the door I saw the postmaster standing behind the counter as though he were waiting for me.  Feeling uneasy I went inside and walked over to my box.  Peering through the window I saw it.  The lone yellow card letting me know a package had arrived.  Shaking off the feeling of dread that had descended upon me like a tightening noose I opened the box and took out the offending card.  It seemed to vibrate in my hand.

I squared my shoulders and walked up to the counter where the postmaster waited for me.  Trying to still the quiver that was in my hand I handed him what I feared was my death sentence.  With a sly smile he asked what box number and I told him.  He returned to the window with a small brown package wrapped in tape.  I looked at the unfamiliar return address and knew at once that it had happened.  My eyes filled with tears and a knot formed in my stomach as my assassin’s shot hit it’s intended mark.  With a concerned look on his face the postmaster asked if I was all right.  “You don’t understand ,” I told him … “I’ve just been assassinated …”

Accepting the package I stumbled from the post office and into my car.  The drive home was a long one.  How had I not seen my assassin?  How could they have been so close and me so unaware …

I mailed my sock in progress this morning (8:19 am to be exact) to my assassin.  I commended her on a job well down and wished her great success.  Her next target has no idea how swiftly and silently her demise will occur … ."

The credit for the kill goes to Diana.  Congratulations!

We also have the second reported death from Missouri.

"Terri accepted her demise with grace on Tuesday, February 5, at 12:40 PM CST. Grace was had because of the beautiful socks that Jennifer air-shipped to Terri."

Jennifer sent the following pictures of the deadly weapon before they were sent to Terri:

Like Kim, Liz could not count on her own killer skills to help her evade the hand of death. This report came in this evening:

"Liz Duncan
2/1/08-2/5/08

Liz survived for 4 glorious days. She was able to elimate one target, before becoming a target herself. She leaves behind a beautiful pair of socks that she wills to Deb. Ironically the same person who killed her.

Liz lies peacefully in her little piece of knitting heaven with wonderfully warm socks and ghirardelli dark chocolate, while making her felted slippers."

Deb made sure Liz's demise was as comfortable as possible, with Noro socks and sweet chocolate.

A little angel helped speed the socks to their target.
102_1100102_1091
Deb even included a poem to soften the blow.

Rest well our dear departed.

For the many who remain, beware.

Two more fall

It is with a heavy (yet somewhat disturbingly gleeful) heart that I report the passing of two brave warriors.  While valiantly knitting away, they didn't realize just how close their own assassins were to weaving in those last ends.

Both arrived to find death literally on their doorsteps.

At 9am, the entire battlefield felt the shock as Lisa of One City Market- an early fan favorite due to her boundless energy and spirit -  fell to the swift hands of Caitlin.  If only Caitlin had Lisa's home address, the kill would have taken place much earlier.  The small reprieve allowed Lisa to see daylight one more time.

The following death notice is posted on the door of One City Market in honor of Lisa:

"Lisa, an avid knitter and competitor in the game, was assassinated by her friend and knitting buddy, Caitlin. The weapon Caitlin chose was a lovely pair of worsted-weight, green heathered, Killer Zap socks and the killing delivery was done in the cowardly fashion of taping the assassination socks to the porch of One City Market. Caitlin shall henceforth be referred to as Caitlin the Sly (aka Sly), due to the sneaky, underhanded way she constructed her weapon right in front of her unsuspecting target."

Congratulations to Caitlin who should be inheriting Lisa's target and on her way to her next kill.  Good luck!

The second death happened locally and was captured by our journalists in the field.  Kim, a sock knitting novice, proved her skills today as she became the third assassin in the game to successfully kill their target.

Susan, may she rest in peace,  gracefully accepted her death and even nominated her killer for the most creative award! Talk about class.

A few pictures of Kim's Killer Zap! socks:

And the actual hit.  That's right.  Our ace reporting team got shots of the killer in action. Don't be fooled by that innocent face.
IMG_0015

I like how she went with the noose for the coffin - nice touch!
IMG_0017
At last count their are 7 deadly pairs of socks making their way to their victims.  That means (if my math is correct) we have 36 players without death breathing down their neck... YET.

Before I finish this update, I must say that I am beyond impressed with the creativity and spirit I have seen.  There are a number of pictures in my email, just waiting for the kills to go down, so that I can share them with everyone. Wow.  That's all I can say.  Wow.  Knitters are really incredible people.  I am truly honored to know you all.

First Kill

Our first kill of the game has been reported and confirmed. At 10:15pm EST, Amy took down Patti. Her strategy was simple, yet brilliant - skip the party, focus on the goal, and finish off her victim with a flourish.

Check out the socks and the coffin in which they sat in wait on the doorstep of the unsuspecting target:

Very well done.  Amy has secured her place in game history as the first assassin to take out her target. Stay tuned for the prize announcement. And remember players, Amy will soon have a new target.  Will it be you? And who is after Amy?

Lest we get too caught up in the thrill of the kill, let us take a moment of silence.  Lay down your needles as we remember our fallen knitter - Patti.  She was a worthy adversary and had even managed to get her socks off to her target before the hand of death struck her down.

Patti 2/1/08 12:30 am - 2/3/08 10:15 pm

She took down one knitter before she fell. She has fought bravely, and in her last moments she faced her death with head held high.

News from the front

As of 10am EST today there have been NO reported kills.  However, at least two assassins have finished their socks and are in the processing of locating their targets.

Last night, we celebrated the start of the battle by opening the boxes sent by our new friends from One City Market.  I carefully removed the sealed package containing the incredible prizes donated by Lisa of OCM - prize information is released on a need to know basis only - and we all enjoyed the fun gifts sent to us by "The Show Me State."

There was more, and it is all at the shop to share and enjoy.

We were so thrilled with the gifts, that we are plotting a little "Taste of Maine" to be sent their way.

After the shop closed, those hearty souls who were willing to risk possibly sitting across from their assassin went to El Camino for dinner, drinks, and a damn good time.

We even got the waiter - the good humored Danny - to hold one of the killer socks.
