The Knitting Experience Blog Archive July 2009

SALE on Saturday!

Did you notice the beautiful summer weather yesterday? I actually got to spend the day on the beach knitting with a friend. My first such trip of this crazy season.

Luckily, even though the weather hasn't been what we would like, the knitting has kept us very busy this summer. If you've been by the shop recently or following the blog, you know that we've been getting many new yarns, patterns, and accessories.  Now that fall is around the corner, even more fabulous fibers and books are arriving. We have exciting plans for it all, but first we could use your help.

With all the new yarns arriving, we need to make some room on the shelves. Of course, that means a sale! Announcing the Summer SALE this Saturday, August 1st. Both online and in the shop, select yarns will be up to 20% off. What might you find on sale? Here's a small sample of the yarns that will be 20% off on Saturday:

Knit One Crochet Too Ty Dy Cotton

Cascade Venezia

Spunky Eclectic Summer

Elsebeth Lavold Hempathy

Noro Taiyo

Euroflax Linen

Classic Elite Bamboo

Classic Elite Soft Linen

Plus a number of others that you will find scattered throughout the shop.

While you are planning your strategy for Saturday and what you might do with all that wonderful yarn, consider joining us for our next knit along. During August we will be hosting the Getting Ready for Fall KAL and knitting The Concetta Cardigan. This wonderful pattern was designed by a talented local artist - Elizabeth Smith of The Brown Stitch. The cardigan itself is a stylish piece that looks great on everyone. As a top down pattern, it is a quick and relatively easy knit - perfect for ensuring that the sweater will be done in time to complement your fall wardrobe. Visit the blog for details on joining us.

Another option for all that wonderful yarn? Crochet! Surely you have noticed all the great patterns appearing for crochet. Well, if you are like me - who can only do the very basics in crochet - you can only look wistfully at those new designs. Luckily we have an amazing new instructor who will be offering an Introduction to  Crochet class on Wednesday August 19 at 6:30pm. Visit the Classes page of our website or call the shop,  207-319-7634, for details.

Today is supposed to be another beautiful sunny day. I hope you are able to enjoy it and that we will see you on Saturday!

Getting Ready for Fall KAL

The Kiri KAL is almost done. (Don't worry if you haven't finished -there's no real deadline.) When one knit along (KAL) is wrapping up, we start looking around for a new project that will inspire and entertain us. This time, one of our very own local knitters - and designers! - came to the rescue. Elizabeth Smith of The Brown Stitch just published that coolest cardigan pattern that had the entire TKE gang talking all week. It was decided almost instantly that we MUST make it our next KAL and get started on it as soon as possible.

So... Announcing the Getting Ready for Fall KAL - The Concetta Cardigan by Elizabeth Smith. (Many thanks to Elizabeth for permission to use the following photos.)

3746196813_d7e9817970

As you can see the cardigan is a classic design with a modern twist. It can be worn as a jacket, or as a great layering piece. Best of all, it is the type of style that looks fabulous on everyone.

To purchase the pattern you can either visit Elizabeth's website: The Brown Stitch, or the pattern description on Ravelry. Once you have the pattern, it's time to pick out the yarn! Since the sweater is knit in a worsted weight, there are a crazy number of options. I'm pretty sure that I will be going with Malabrigo Worsted, although the final decision will be made on Thursday.  Becka is considering Mirasol Miski

Once you've decided to join and picked your yarn, let me know you're in. In addition to Becka and myself, Lisa, Susan, and Cheryl will be KALing with us.

New

I mentioned new yarns and things in the last post.  Since I don't particularly feel like walking downstairs to get the next stack of paperwork that demands my attention, I shall tell you about the newness - a much happier activity, don't you think?

First up is another gorgeous sock yarn.  Can you tell I was smitten with socks at TNNA? Asland Trends sent us their beautiful hand dyed sock yarn. 2 skeins make a pair - quite a deal for only $5.95 a skein!

Check out the colors:

Becka and I have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of this next goody: Debbie Bliss Rialto. I have been in search of a good, washable DK and the sales rep wowed us with the sample sweater knit in Rialto. It was so soft and squishy with amazing stitch definition.  We were in love. But, before ordering, we checked the feedback on Ravelry.com. The knitters gave Rialto rave reviews. That was enough for us. (Oh, did I mention that it is superwash?)

The first half of our shipment brought these colors:

IMG_8178

And this pattern book devoted to Rialto.

IMG_8134

Don't you love the cover vest? It is called Catriona. David has promised to make us one as a store sample. The pattern is included in the Rialto book, but I'll give ya a helpful hint: it is also free here

Some other fabulous projects from the book:

Two more Debbie Bliss books arrived:

Design it, Knit it - a collection of great patterns, as well as fascinating insight on the design process including basic guides to getting you started designing your own knits!

IMG_8133IMG_8138

IMG_8139IMG_8140

How could we pass up a book called Booties, Blankets & Bears?

IMG_8125IMG_8180

IMG_8181IMG_8183

Our favorite Noro designer, Jenny Watson, has a new Mini Knits collection. The patterns are both stylish and classic.

That's the newness update for now. Stay tuned for announcement of the next KAL!

KAL Update

It has turned into a very lacey summer. Not only have many of us been working away on our KAL project - the Kiri shawl (or something similar), many have kept the lace theme going by knitting multiple shawls.

I've always viewed lace as one of the more awe-inspiring elements of our craft. The intricate stitches produce a network of fiber that paint the most lovely images. When you consider that many of these pieces are crafted from one long continuous thread of yarn, it is all the more impressive.

My own Kiri came off the needles yesterday. It is still in that unblocked, rumpled state. When the sun decides to make an appearance I will dunk the whole thing in a Soak bath and watch the fabric transform.

IMG_8209IMG_8216

Here's a shot with the flash to highlight just how messy the stitches look in their pre-blocked state.

IMG_8213

Sue completed her first (ever!) lace project this past week. She made the Leaf Lace Shawl out of Hempathy.

IMG_8196IMG_8197

Peggy completed her Seascape AND her Show Your Colors Shawl.

IMG_8088IMG_8192

Her Kiri is looking beautiful.

IMG_8194

Susan finished and blocked her Show Your Colors shawl.  I believe she used one skein of Schaefer Heather sock yarn.

IMG_8114

Barbara was almost done with her Kiri last week, and I think she may have finished it over the weekend.

IMG_8092

Sarah and Adrienne were close to finishing their Show Your Colors shawls when I saw them on Saturday.  I neglected to get a picture of Adrienne's shawl (perhaps she will bring it to KAN??), but here is an early pic of Sarah's:

IMG_8089

Not all the knits on the needles are shawls, of course.

Amanda made us two fabulous samples for the shop. She whipped up the Spud and Chloe Boy Meets Girl ear flap hats using Spud and Chloe Outer. This stuff is so cozy soft. Yum.

IMG_8123IMG_8124

Two of the Baby Cuddle sweaters have recently appeared. The pink is done in Dream in Color Classy, and the blue in Cascade 220 Superwash.

IMG_8201IMG_8117

Barbara made an outstanding Ilene bag using one skein of Euroflax linen.

IMG_8091

Ericka created this gorgeous baby blanket from Cascade Sierra.  She is now designing a new one out of Cascade 220 Superwash.

IMG_8121

Phew! I think that catches us up a bit on the knits.  As many of you know, we have lots of new yarn in the shop and more on the way. A new KAL is the planning stages. All this means I need to write about 3 more blog posts to get caught up!

Do you crochet?

Has the life of a hooker remained an elusive mystery for you?

Have you looked with longing at gorgeous patterns such as these:

 IMG_8079

TA81

TA80

and wished you knew what the heck the directions were talking about?

Here's your chance! The incredible Bridget, who not only has mean crochet skills, but also a talent for teaching, will be offering an introduction to crochet on Wed. August 19th from 6:30-8pm.

In this class, you’ll learn the basic crochet stitches and how to work both flat and in the round. You’ll also discuss how to read a crochet pattern.  For more details, visit our Classes page.

I recommend registering as soon as possible. There are only 6 spots in the class, and 2 were snapped up before I managed to get this posted!

Tough Sock

Happiness arrived on Friday in the shape of bags of Spunky Eclectic Tough Sock.

IMG_8102

Sorry, the Popsicle colorway has already left to happy homes. I finally snagged a skein of Killer Tomato - one with a streak of deep red. Everything else is up for grabs. Who will be the lucky knitters?

On the spinning side

Lately life hasn't allowed much time for my other fiber obsession - spinning.

Luckily Amy went ahead and wrote a brilliant book, and held a book launch party to celebrate.

IMG_7817

Now, when there is a launch party for a brilliant spinning book, you can't very well not spin, can you?

Here's Amy with the coolest cake. (How did they do that??)

IMG_8052

I snapped a shot of the now famous swatches and sample skeins that appear in the book.

IMG_8054

In addition to the cake, Amy made delicious carrot cake cupcakes. (Think I can convert these to gluten free?)

IMG_8048

My Ladybug accompanied me to the party. We worked on some Spunky Eclectic handpainted alpaca in the Seaglass colorway.

IMG_8049

By Sunday evening it had turned into this lovely skein:

IMG_8058

IMG_8060IMG_8061

It still needs to be washed and blocked. In honor of Amy's book, I played around with some of the techniques she described. I worked on controlling the color, the thickness of the fiber, and my drawing technique.

As I played around, I tried to figure out which methods would work best to spin this:

IMG_8063

That would be 2 braids of Panda - a wool/bamboo/nylon blend. I snagged it at the party (Amy was having a sale, how could I resist?). I think I want to make these into my first handspun socks. I'm thinking 3 ply, with longish color repeats. Or I may just sit and pet it.  That would make me happy too.

Knitscene

The Fall 2009 Knitscene mags are here!

IMG_8055

Get 'em while they're hot! My favorite pattern? The Berkshire Dolman Sweater by Melissa Wehrle, knit in Cascade Eco Wool.

Hopping

Last KAN was so much fun.  For the past few weeks, the shop has been packed with knitters enjoying a little summer downtime. It's been hopping!

IMG_8027

Terrible pun, I know, but I just couldn't resist! Isn't he adorable?? Luanne made me Ribbit. I absolutely adore him. She was able to get 2 Ribbits from one skein of Spud and Chloe Sweater, and she's pretty sure she can get a third.  We've sold out of the green but will be getting more soon. Let me know if you'd like a skein reserved for your very own Ribbit.  And thanks Luanne!!

Another lovely creature made an appearance at KAN.

IMG_8029

Michelle is crafting this beautiful beaded butterfly bag. It is mesmerizing to watch her scoop the beads on the tiniest needles I have ever seen.

We had an impromptu crochet class happening in the back of the shop.  Bridget was so kind as to help out a couple crochet novices.

IMG_8019

Barbara is speeding along on her Kiri - our Summer KAL.

IMG_8021

She is using Melody Superwash.

Barbara is also working on a Featherweight Cardigan out of Spunky Eclectic Summer in Silt.

IMG_8020

While I was snapping pictures of her projects, Barbara did a great product review of the new Fiberspheres. These clever yarn ball containers are designed to let your yarn balls roll around freely without tangling or collecting pet hair.  Because you can open the plastic ball at anytime, you never need to cut the yarn to get your yarn ball out!

IMG_7843IMG_7844

Barbara discovered that with smaller projects, you can actually get the project and needle cord inside the ball as well.

IMG_8025IMG_8026

Sue is KALongside us with her very first lace project. She is making a summer shawl using Hempathy.

IMG_8033

Susan discovered that by making a lacey scarf on much smaller needles, you get the most interesting texture.

IMG_8034

It looks woven, doesn't it?

Lisa is KALongside as well, but with the Show Your Colors Shawl from Spunky Eclectic.  This has been an extremely popular project this summer. Just the right combo of stst and lace.

IMG_8036

Terri is KALing with Debbie Bliss's Baby Cashmerino.  It is heavenly soft and looks fantastic in lace.

IMG_8040

Chris started a Sprout Cardi (another Spunky favorite of ours.)

IMG_8037

Pam is also making a Featherweight Cardi, but she is using Malabrigo Sock - as is Becka!

IMG_8030

Anna was working on a sweater with a fabulous yoke.

IMG_8039

I love the cable detail!

Speaking of Anna, if you get the Twist Collective newsletter, you may have noticed that she was featured in their FO Gallery.  Congrats Anna!

If you don't get the newsletter - jump over to their website at Twist.  While you are there check out the latest pattern - Roo, by Kate Gilbert - the perfect children's sweater for fall.

Shibui

Oh, boy, oh, boy, oh, boy!

IMG_7910

Aren't they lovely? And we're still expecting more colors!

Of course, I had to get some of their great patterns to go along with the mouthwatering yarn.

IMG_7937IMG_7936

IMG_7939IMG_7940

IMG_7938

I've already cast on for this:

IMG_7941

It is heavenly to knit.

Which is good, because this weather is giving me a migraine. According to the current state of my head, we are either going to get a massive set of thunderstorms, or a brilliant clearing and actual sunshine. I shall hope for the sun as I knit on this joyously colorful baby sweater.

Noticing Knits

Last week was crazy with all the projects appearing at the shop. I didn't get my camera out in time for all of them, but this should give you an idea of the creativity and talent sparking off the ends of needles everywhere.

Christine popped in to say hello as she was about to head out of town on an extended road tip with 3 children.  She is a braver woman than I!

Notice the beautiful shrug she is wearing knit out of Cascade Venezia. Would you believe this is her first sweater? Ever?

IMG_7835IMG_7834

David has once again knit up a shop sample in record time. How does he do it?

IMG_7850IMG_7847

This is the Lovey Dovey top out of Spud and Chloe Sweater. You HAVE GOT TO touch this yarn. It is incredible! I desperately need something for me out of it. Ideas?

While magically whipping up the top, he also put the finishing touches on another Cable Cuddle sweater. This one is for his soon to be born niece.

IMG_7852

Luanne had a fabulous tank completed out of Ty Dy Cotton. Don't you love how the colors play out? This one is for her granddaughter.

IMG_7856

Susan had the whole room in awe over her version of the Featherweight Cardigan. Rather than go with the lace weight yarn as designed, she used Spunky Eclectic Summer, which is more of a DK.  This resulted in a solid fabric.  It looks incredible!

IMG_7858IMG_7860

Cheryl showed us just how great lace looks in sock yarn.  I hear the finished shawl will be touring CA soon.

IMG_7861

Michelle just finished a Kitty Pie bed to be donated to the local animal rescue.

IMG_7862IMG_7863

In addition to the top for her granddaughter, Luanne is making a yummy soft cardi for herself. IMG_7867

She is using Cherry Tree Hill's Charmed. (I wish you could see the sparkles, but they don't show in this pic.) Luanne took our continental knitting class and is practicing on the cardi. By the time she is done, I think she'll be a true convert.

Then, Luanne started to wind up this color of Spud and Chloe Sweater

IMG_7888

To make Ribbit.

ribbit.jpg

Check it out -it's a free pattern! And it bounces! Really. Bounces. I need one.

Bridget finished her ugly doll. Don't you love the belly button? I hear that he brings good luck vibes.

IMG_7889

See that last one? That would be the first attempt at my Kiri Shawl.  I am using Kid Seta and started out on the US 7 recommended by the pattern. Problem? I hated the resulting fabric.  Waaaaayyyy too loose. I felt like the leaves had very little shape. After much agonizing (you know how much I hate to rip), and support from the entire room, I decided to do the unthinkable and start over. Mind you, I had made more progress than shown above, but not so much that true heartache was involved.

Now I am here:

IMG_7902

And very happy.  You can actually see the leaves. Pretty, pretty leaves.

Speaking of RIPPPPPP, I am getting better at it. When a project isn't working, when you know you will never wear it, when it is a sock that will never get a mate, there is no point in persisting in the oh, so frequent knitterly game of denial. It must go.

Remember how I started a the Diagonal Rib Socks, but had to take out 6sts because it was too big? Clearly 6sts weren't enough. I felt like my foot was swimming around in the stupid thing. See how loosey goosey it is?

IMG_7900

The only other pattern I had with me when I decided to rip, was my own, so that's what I started instead.

IMG_7901

Oh, did you happen to notice that the last 3 pictures were taken outside???? Yes! There was actual sunshine. Novel, I know.

Anyways, sun meant I could finally block Clapotis. I actually considered not blocking it since it needs to be gifted soon, and to be honest, it looked pretty damn good unblocked.

IMG_7897IMG_7898

But now.  The stitches have all settled in. The fibers all relaxed as if to say, oh, this is what we were meant to be, this is nice, we can work with this. The resulting fabric is super soft and lovely. Now I need to make one for me.
