Time to Party!

This week marks a very important milestone for The Knitting Experience Café. As of Thursday, we will be 4 years old! To celebrate such a happy occasion, we wanted to do something special to thank you, and all the wonderful customers who have helped the shop grow and thrive. The best way to celebrate and show our appreciation? With a party, of course!

On Saturday, August 29, from 10am-4pm:

• All in stock yarns, books, and patterns will be 10% off. (Sale prices will be available all weekend through the online store at: theknittingexperience.com)

• Everyone who comes to the shop on Saturday will be able to enter for fabulous door prizes.

• Anyone purchasing $50 or more in the shop on Saturday will receive a free hand or neck massage courtesy of our very own Amanda. (Did you know that Amanda is also a licensed massage therapist and can be found working her magic at Sweet Water Day Spa?)

So, clear your schedules for Saturday and spend the day with us. In addition to the sale, door prizes, and free massages, this is the perfect time to check out all the new fall yarns and to get inspiration for your next project!

Cascade and Noro

The BIG boxes have been arriving.

All year long we get boxes of various sizes containing an array of deliciously wonderful yarns (such as next week when more Dream in Color Classy and Smooshy should be here) but it is really only in the fall that truly gianormous boxes fill up the shop. That's when the yarns for those crisp cool weather knits fill the shelves. When your eyes start turning to cabley cardigans and handknit socks, you can bet that something equally yummy is entering the shop.

Cascade sent us the most recent massive shipment - and this is only part of the fall order!

We have a bounty of one of my absolute favorites ( I knit 2 sweaters out of this last year) - Baby Alpaca Chunky.

IMG_8612

Notice the ones in the middle? Those are the new Paints.  Gorgeous variegated in the Baby Alpaca Chunky.

We now have a tower of Eco Wool.  I couldn't quite get it all in one shot, but here's how it looks:

And here's a shot of the happy family:

IMG_8621

David made Becka the Owls sweater out of Eco Wool in about 2 days. As soon as he gets the buttons sewn on, he has promised to let us borrow it in the shop. I'll share a pic once it arrives. Another great project idea for this yarn? The Heather Hoodie Vest from Knitscene.

Magnum is back! We had so much fun with this beyond-bulky yarn last year.

IMG_8636

The Last Hurrah Scarf was a big hit for this yarn, as were almost all the Twinkle Knits patterns.

In the classic 220, we ordered some of the fabulous new tweed colors. What could be more perfect for fall?

IMG_8640

This is actually a great choice for our current KAL - The Concetta Cardigan!

I couldn't resist getting 2 new colors in the Heritage Paints sock yarn. Aren't these pretty?

More colors of Debbie Bliss Rialto are here:

IMG_8605

I REALLY, really want to make the cover sweater from 9 to 5:

And the shelves are packed with Noro Silk Garden and Kureyon.  A little taste of the colors:

Aside from taking pictures of all this yarn, what have I been doing? Well, Concetta is done and blocked. It needs buttons which will go on today or tomorrow. The Vintage Baby Cardigan is also in the done category. Projects off the needles, means new projects on!

Just started the Mondo Cable Cardi from Chic Knits.

IMG_8258

I'm using Dream in Color Classy in the Gothic Rose colorway.

IMG_8576

As with The Concetta, I am alternating between 2 different skeins to prevent the dreaded pooling of color.

IMG_8578

I've been dying to cast on for this sweater since I saw it at TNNA in June. It is going to make the perfect layering piece for fall. The pattern has been hugely popular in the shop as well. We are almost sold out, but more should be here next week.

Quickie

I'm getting ready to head into the shop for the day, but wanted to share a bit of the fun Knit at Night we had on Thursday. The shop was packed and there were so many great projects happening around the room. I don't have time to describe them now so I'll just leave you with a quick pictorial taste of the fiber beauty.

Oh, and I finished my Concetta (minus arm seaming, weaving ends, and applying the buttons.)

Happy Saturday all!

Vacation

This week the family and I are taking a little downtime. With only a handful of days before the boys return to school and the fall schedule begins, we figured that this was the perfect time to laze around the house, go to the beach, watch movies, or whatever  strikes out fancy at the moment.  In other words, we are thoroughly enjoying the very fashionable staycation.

In a moment I need to go fix the boys lunch before sending them out to splash in the little wading pool. But while Peter inflates the pool, and the boys are finding their swimming trunks, I thought I'd show you what I've been doing.

My Malabrigo Concetta is almost done.

IMG_8435

These pics were taken yesterday afternoon. Since that time, the left band came off the needles, and the right is at the point of adding buttonholes. I stopped there since I don't yet have buttons and therefore don't know how big to make the holes.  I found the perfect buttons while shopping in Freeport on Sunday. Unfortunately, they were attached to a rather expensive wool jacket. The search goes on.

Aside from the buttonband, I just need to weave in ends and sew up the arms.

IMG_8437

Wait, sew up the arms?!, you say.  Weren't those supposed to be knit in the round.  Yes. Technically. However, I've decided that I don't really like knitting sleeves in the round - so I didn't.

Shibui emailed to let me know that more Vintage Baby Cardigan patterns are on the way, along with a new supply of sock yarn in the Spectrum colorway that I am using for the shop sample. That spurred me on to pull out the cardi and get it done.

IMG_8438

Again, only end weaving and sleeve seaming left.

Oh, and I've been spinning. The Panda braids from Spunky Eclectic are spun, plied, washed, and ready to knit.

IMG_8442

IMG_8446

IMG_8455

They want to be socks for me. I'm playing around with potential stitch patterns and will keep you posted on our progress.

Ok - the boys are demanding food. I hope you are enjoying these August days. I'll be at the shop tonight for the fabulous Bridget's crochet class and then again tomorrow for KAN. I wouldn't miss KAN.

Made in Brooklyn

The much anticipated Made in Brooklyn pattern collection from designer Jared Flood is here!

IMG_8351

The patterns are incredible. A quick sample of my top picks:

IMG_8355IMG_8358

IMG_8356IMG_8357

If you reserved one, don't worry we set it aside. If you didn't claim one, hurry - these aren't going to last long!

In the same shipment we received the latest issue of Curvy Knits: Cambridge by Jillian Moreno and Classic Elite.

IMG_8348

Check out this sweater:

IMG_8352

I adore the lacey yoke.

Becka made another great call in insisting that we get the first edition of the new knitting magazine, St - Denis. The primary designer is Véronik Avery, and contributors include: Pam Allen, Jared Flood, Franklin Habit, and Ysolda Teague.

IMG_8350

As you might expect, the patterns are stunning. My favs:

IMG_8359IMG_8360

We also restocked Johns Bay from Classic Elite.

IMG_8349

This collection contains the very popular Drape Front Cardigan.

IMG_7531

I made it out of Euroflax Linen and I'm seriously considering making a cold weather version.

IMG_7585

The arrival of August means that there is a new Spunky Eclectic Color of the Month! Introducing Panda sock yarn, a superwash merino/bamboo/nylon blend in the Vineyard colorway. As always, the color of the month is 15% off until the end of August or the yarn is gone.

IMG_8269

How are those Concetta Cardigans coming along? Seems there was a teeny tiny error on the pattern. The original version -which has been corrected- had you placing the buttonhole band on the left side, but it SHOULD be on the RIGHT. A minor, yet important detail. Many thanks to the designer, Elizabeth Smith, for alerting us to the problem and immediately sending out corrected patterns.

The body is done on my Concetta. I'm working on the arms now.

IMG_8397IMG_8379

Kiri finally got blocked this week. Isn't it lovely?

IMG_8374

Connor and Alec helped me with the photo shoot.  While that meant I found pictures such as these on my camera:

IMG_8396IMG_8367

IMG_8371IMG_8384

It also meant that they saw something I didn't. See this shot of the sky?

IMG_8386

It's the same color as my Kiri and Concetta.

IMG_8370IMG_8399

So, the question is, have the grey skies of this summer permanently damaged my ability to appreciate color? Or, have they just shown me the beauty of the unappreciated greys?

Lace, Concetta, Wedding, and New Stuff

Phew! It's been a busy week. So much to tell you about.

First, a big thank you to everyone for the successful sale on Saturday. It was fun to see everyone, hear what you are currently knitting, and get to see you plan your next project. With your help, we managed to make room for some of the great yarns currently arriving, but there is still some of the summer stock left. So... we've decided to extend the sale through this coming Saturday. Baskets are spread around the shop full of fabulous deals - many of which are also to be found through the online store.

Now, back to the week in review!

KAN (Knit at Night) and KISS (Knit In the Shop on Saturday) were just amazing as we had finished lace projects to see, and many Concetta Cardigans being cast on the needles.

Barbara and her lovely Kiri:

IMG_8226

Cheryl and her gorgeous triangle shawl (sorry, forgetting the name). Notice the fabulous shawl pin? That is an Annie Adams pin. We are almost sold out of our first batch. I need to reorder!

Peggy's Seascape, and Luanne's scarf from Ocean Breezes, knit with Cascade Fixation:

Susan's beautiful socks, and Jen's stunning shawl:

IMG_8241

Our Concetta KAL got started in the best possible way. After all, how often do you get the ACTUAL DESIGNER to stop by and knit while you cast on?

IMG_8243

Elizabeth cheered us on, answered questions, and even brought the original sweater! It will be on display in the shop. Thank you!!!

Here are the beginnings of a few Concettas:

IMG_8225IMG_8229

IMG_8242

IMG_8265

That last one would be mine. I'm using Malabrigo Worsted in the Polar Morn colorway. Can you tell I'm loving working on this project? It is practically knitting itself.

In the hours before KAN started, we got a real treat - we hosted a bridal party knitting adventure!

IMG_8220IMG_8221

See the lovely girl in the middle with the lobster veil? That would be our Charlotte - a member of KAN from back in her Bowdoin days. Saturday, she and Dave (another Bowdoin alum) got married. The weather was perfect, the bride was beautiful, and the groom couldn't have been happier. Congratulations to you both!!

With all that's been happening, I've neglected keeping you posted on the arrival of new stuffs. There just isn't room now to do it all justice, so I'll leave you with the highlights.

Fall Interweave Knits is in! I recommend getting one SOON as they will not last long.

IMG_8252

Our first batch of Noro Kureyon, Silk Garden, and Iro is making its way to the shelves. This color of Silk Garden has us particularly entranced:

IMG_8253

More Dream in Color Classy skeins are waiting for happy homes.

IMG_8250

I snagged some of the Classy in Gothic Rose to knit my favorite of the new Chic Knits patterns - the Mondo Cable Cardi.

IMG_8258

It comes with a capped sleeve version and that's the one I'll be knitting.

That doesn't catch us up, but it's a start.
