Party Time

Last night we held our annual Knit at Night Halloween Party. As always, the knitters stepped up with fabulous costumes and incredible food.

Amanda and I were ready for any challenge that the night might present. She was looking adorable as a cowgirl and I simply couldn't resist the Wonder Woman costume I found at Target.

IMG_9453

Mary Ellen and Lesley planned a very creative team costume - the patient and doctor!

IMG_9448

Luanne found the best wig EVER and it was an honor to have Cleopatra at our party.

IMG_9450IMG_9469

Barbara was adorable in her mini witch hat. Those nails made knitting interesting!

IMG_9451

Barb was a stunning Laverne. That hair was a outstanding.

IMG_9454

Donna was a little devil. If you look closely at the picture, you will notice that she has some evil red eye going on. And check out the stunning moebius. She used Dream in Color Starry and knit the whole thing using the continental knitting!!!

IMG_9459

Karen was simply fahbulous dahling as a fashionista.

IMG_9461

Jenna made sure that the undead was well represented. Loved the peeling skin make-up.

IMG_9467

Michelle was a gorgeous fortune teller.

Thanks everyone for a great night! Knitters definitely know how to have a good time.

Early Bird SALE this Saturday!!!!

It's that time of year again! The Brunswick Downtown Early Bird Sale is this Saturday, October 31st!

For those who might be new to this annual tradition, let me explain. Each year, on the last Saturday of October, many downtown businesses open their doors at an absurdly early hour to offer you the chance to get started on your holiday shopping with fabulous deals. Typically, shops offer discounts based on the time you arrive. In other words, the earlier you are there, the better the deals!

At The Knitting Experience Café all in-stock yarn, books, needles, patterns, bags, and accessories will be on sale.

6-7 am = 30% off

7-8 am = 20% off

8-9 am = 15% off

It is our biggest sale of the year - and the most fun. Since the sale is all about who can make it to the shop so early in the morning, the discounts are available only at our downtown Brunswick location, not online. In other words you have to join us in setting those alarms and heading downtown. We'll be wearing our pajamas and will have the coffee ready.

Hope you can join us!

Inspiration Monday - Bella's Mittens

What is the perfect thing to knit on this week of Halloween? You could try to whip up a last minute costume. But, that is a lot of effort for one day of wear. How about something that can be used all winter? Something elegant, yet inspired by the spookier side of life?

Marielle Henault designed the perfect project: Bella's Mittens.

IMG_9418

These gorgeous mittens were inspired by the mittens worn by Bella in the first Twilight movie. You know, the movie based on the insanely popular vampire series?

A word on the books and movie:

I was a skeptic. I just didn't think the vampire thing was for me. Becka convinced me to give the books a try. Sister was right. I got sucked in and couldn't put them down. They are a fun, fast read. The movie is fabulous. So much so, that I'm actually heading out with a good friend to the midnight showing for the release of the second movie on November 20th.

These mittens have become almost as popular as the books and movie. They are designed using about 200yds of a chunky yarn. Our sample -made by Amanda- is knit using Spunky Eclectic Biggie Yarn. Other fabulous options include: Cascade 128 Superwash, Cascade Baby Alpaca Chunky (David made Becka a pair out of the alpaca. Lucky, lucky girl.), Spud and Chloe Outer, Cascade Eco Wool

The pattern is free and can be found on Ravelry here. Or on the designer's webpage

The timing couldn't be more perfect for knitting your very own pair of Bella's Mittens. Not only will you have them to wear to the next Twilight movie, you can enter them into a contest sponsored by the designer. Details can be found on her blog. Basically, all you need to do is knit a pair of Bella's Mittens, take some cool pictures, post them to the Bella's Mittens flickr pool, and perhaps you will win some fibery, vampirey stuffs.

Starry and Knitosophy From Dream in Color

Looky what UPS brought today:

IMG_9409IMG_9380

IMG_9377IMG_9378

IMG_9363IMG_9368

IMG_9374IMG_9360

It's a brand new sock yarn series from Dream in Color called Knitosophy. The yarn itself is the same squishy, superwash 100% superfine Australian Merino that you'll find in their Smooshy. But the dye technique is new. Knitosophy is Flash Dyed creating completely unique skeins in which the color plays out randomly. I fell in love with the yarn, the colors, and even the beautiful labels, so we brought in all 8 colors. Right now, I'm trying to decide which color needs to be my next pair of socks. I'm thinking Laugh. But Blossom and Butterfly are also in the running. Hmmmm....

While I consider color choices, I thought you should see other fabulous new sock yarn from Dream in Color: Starry.

IMG_9391IMG_9394

IMG_9413IMG_9415

Starry also uses superfine Australian merino, but adds a little sparkle to jazz up your sock or any project. Admittedly, this yarn came into the shop 2 weeks ago and most of it disappeared in the first few days. I grabbed a skein of a deep blue, and am working it into a shawl. It looks like the night sky. (Pictures soon!) I can't even tell you how much I love knitting with sparkles! Only a few skeins of our first shipment remain, but more will be coming.

Rhinebeck!

I'm skipping Inspiration Monday today in honor of the Rhinebeck Sheep and Wool Festival. It was a fabulous weekend, with amazing fiber folk, and gorgeous fiber everywhere you turned.

The journey began friday morning when Lesley picked me up. She is my hero for driving the entire route, especially since the weather on the way home was of the white slushy variety. See that stuff out the window? That's what we - or rather, Lesley, - faced for 6 hours yesterday.

IMG_9329

(And that's Spunky Eclectic Amy being adorable for the camera.)

But, I'm getting ahead of myself. The trip started without snow, and we drove with Spunky Amy and David of Southern Cross Fibre

IMG_9307

IMG_9309

I finished my very first pair of handspun, handknit socks for the occasion. The fiber is Panda from Spunky Eclectic in the Sherwood colorway and I am silly proud about how they came out.

IMG_9305

My camera angle was poor, but I had to try and capture our arrival.

IMG_9308

We arrived early enough on Friday to meet up with Beth from The Spinning Loft, who was there to teach classes all weekend.

IMG_9310

And score some Socks that Rock.

IMG_9311

Silliness ensued.

IMG_9312

Saturday was a beautiful day.

IMG_9314

Chilly enough to necessitate all the warm wooly things people were sporting, including us.

As we turned the corner out of one of the barns, we had the happy surprise of running into Anna! She was wearing a fabulous new design of her very own creation. She reported that the finishing touches were added in the car on the way to NY.

IMG_9315IMG_9316

Penny and Donna were both stunning in their new sweaters.

IMG_9317

And Lizzie got spotted for wearing a Clapotis shawl in the wild!

IMG_9318

This year we skipped the hotel route and stayed at a rented house with a great group. Many, many thanks to Carolyn (dinner was amazing), Nicole, Jen, Adrian (cheese party - yum), Amy (wonderful breakfast!), David, Lesley, Maryse, and John for the fun. A million thanks to Adrian for the brilliant idea and arranging everything. After a full day of shopping, we got to relax back at the house, knit, and enjoy the charming local deer.

IMG_9320

So, what goodies did I get?

400yds of pure cashmere from Still River Mill in Eastford, CT.

IMG_9333

I'm thinking it needs to be a Pretty Thing, the new cowl by the Yarn Harlot.

A skein of sock yarn from Socks that Rock. I couldn't resist the colors.

IMG_9334

8 ounces of handdyed BFL from Briar Rose Fibers

IMG_9336

And 4 ounces of superwash merino in Lagoon from Fiber Optic Yarns, as well as 4 ounces of superwash merino  pencil roving with seacell in "Days of Wine and Roses."

IMG_9338IMG_9339

I'm already looking forward to next year!

Inspiration Monday - Vests

Once again, I did not have to try very hard to come up with a project for this week's Inspiration Monday. Susan handed it to me on a lovely Raverly thread. In asking her fellow knitters what vest pattern they like best, she started another spontaneous knit along! Seems as though everyone is feeling the vest vibe at the moment, and it's not surprising with so many great patterns appearing.

Therefore, without further ado, I bring you, The Great Vest Knit Along of 2009!! (With much thanks to Susan who started it all.)

Now, there has been some debate as to what constitutes a vest. For the purposes of this KAL we're going with the loosest interpretation. Any sweater knit without sleeves is a vest. (Although, if you just happen to want to knit a full sleeved item, we will not discriminate. We'll call it a vest with sleeves and you're in.)

Back to the sleeveless. You may have noticed a recent fashion trend towards the capped sleeved vest/sweater. For example, I made my Mondo Cardigan without the full sleeves.

(Now we pause while I take this opportunity to show off my Mondo Cable Cardigan. Can you tell that I'm just a little bit pleased with how it turned out? I used 3 skeins of Dream in Color Classy in the Gothic Rose colorway.)

IMG_9255IMG_9256'

IMG_9260IMG_9267

As you can see, the capped sleeve style is neither a traditional sweater, nor vest. For purposes of our KAL, we'll count it in the vest category.

I know that usually we pick one pattern for our KALs, but honestly, there are so many good vest patterns out there, that I am going to leave as a general garment KAL and see what happens. I figure it will be a good way to see new patterns and how our knitters choose to interpret them. If you'd like to join, we're aiming to start next week. Let me know the pattern, yarn, adjustments you are making, etc... .

I'll be making Talia from Knitty.com and using a brand new yarn - Cascade's new Superwash 128, a bulky superwash merino.  Sandy and Bridget are joining me. (Thanks to Sandy for suggesting the pattern!)

Lesley chose Debbie Bliss Rialto DK for the Honeycomb Vest

Sue and Diane already have the Scoop Neck Vest from Blue Sky Alpacas going.

TB19

Peggy is going with the Many Buttoned Vest from Folk Vests. She'll be using Jo Sharp Silkroad Tweed.

Luanne is considering Abrazo, also from Knitty.com.

Patti is looking at the Estes Vest from Interweave.

Donna is liking the Circle Vest from Silk Knits.

Emily will be making Dr. G's Memory Vest for a family friend.

Once you decided on your vest, let me know, and I'll add you to the list. We'll get pictures up when those needles start moving.

Happy Vest-alonging!

Colonnade Update

Colonnades are popping up everywhere!

I finished mine - for the second time. It debuted at KAN last week.

IMG_9097

Then got blocked and worn again.

IMG_9191

Now Isabella is modeling it until I steal it back for the trip to Rhinebeck.

IMG_9192

The amazing Donna, who started us all on the Colonnade craze -and saved mine from disaster - was looking smashing in hers:

IMG_9095

(Notice the Noro sweater in her lap? I do believe that, as well as the Colonnade, will be seen at Rhinebeck this year.)

Luanne looked stunning in her Malabrigo Colonnade.

IMG_9071

IMG_9072

The color combination is perfect!

Sue recycled a sweater to make this lovely green version:

IMG_9073

Barbara has perhaps the best name for her Colonnade. It's called Mine! Sometimes, when we have been knitting and knitting for all the loved ones in our lives, it it time to claim something for ourselves.

IMG_9069IMG_9070

Susan made a beautiful mini Colonnade out of Mini Mochi.

IMG_9066IMG_9067

Terri put together a gorgeous color combo out of Cascade 220 for her Colonnade.

IMG_9084

Pam is using the Baby Alpaca Chunky and was about at the same point as Terri.

IMG_9099

Wendy - our long distance KALer - finished hers and we might get to see it in person when she visits this month! She used Malabrigo Worsted.

And while this next photo isn't a Colonnade, it is perhaps the most exciting project of the week. Jerri finished her Rogue Hoodie from our very first KAL at TKE! Congratulations Jerri!

Inspiration Monday - The Booga Bag!

I am thrilled to announce that we now carry the Booga Bag pattern.  This famous -and very popular- felted bag pattern hasn't been available for awhile as the designer worked on enhancing the pattern with a mini-Booga Bag bonus, and Bigger and Biggest Booga Bags designs.  The Booga Bag family is now complete and we thought the happy collection would make the perfect Inspiration Monday.

IMG_9059IMG_9058

The Original Booga Bag took advantage of the beautiful color transitions of the Noro Kureyon yarn. The new Bigger and Biggest Booga Bags use the Noro Kureyon for the colorful sides, and Cascade 220 for a sturdy base. (For the Original Booga, you'll need only 3 skeins of Noro Kureyon. For the Bigger and Biggest, you will need 3 or 4 skeins of Kureyon, and 2 skeins of Cascade 220 for the base.)

The Booga Bag became so popular because of it's simplicity. It is the perfect first felting project, or fabulous quick knit gift!

NOW, we interrupt your regular yarn-themed content for something completely different:

Please indulge me for a moment. I need to use the blog for a little family business. You see, my younger brother is currently deployed with the Navy.

IMG_9135

He and his family are stationed in San Diego, so we don't get to see them that often. This weekend we had a rare treat. My sister-in-law, Andrea, brought their 3 kids to Maine to visit. On Sunday, we got together at my parents house and the cousins were together for the first time in probably 2 years! It was amazing to see them all together. Since Jay is on deployment, he missed seeing all the kids  and I thought that posting the pictures here would be the easiest way of sharing. So, Jay, these are for you. We miss you and love you!
