Cool Stuff

Cool Stuff

'Tis the season for all the cool gift ideas (for you or other knitters in your life). I've got some great things to show you.

But, before we get to that.  Here is a little adorableness to make you smile.  Sandy sent in pics of her little guy modeling the hat and scarf set she made for him out of Twilley's Freedom Spirit.

Max fall   max shopping
Thanks Sandy!

Lantern Moon made a recent delivery.  We got a new batch of silk needle cases.

More ladybug tape measures - because I can't seem to keep these little ones from flying out the door.  This time, Lantern Moon included a surprise. One of the tape measures is a leaf with 3 tiny ladybugs on it.  There is only ONE.  First come. First serve.
IMG_2482
For baskets, we have the new Vui tote.
IMG_2487
Isn't it beautiful?

Spunky Amy came up with a brilliant idea for all of us knitters - the emergency knitting bag!
IMG_2483
Evidently, Amy found herself stuck in a LONG line at the DMV without any knitting. And she thought, if only she had a small project stashed away in her car for just such occasions.  We never have to be without our knitting again! Thank you, Amy!

Not to be left out of the cool gift idea fun, Lorna's Laces came up with the Little Can of Paint. Each cute little can comes with 2 skeins of their Shepherd Sock yarn (enough for a pair of socks) and one of their sock patterns.

Ok, knitters, time to fill out those wish lists!

Noro Kureyon Sock Yarn

Noro Kureyon Sock Yarn

You've heard the rumors.

Now brace yourself.

Noro Kureyon Sock Yarn is not only real, it's coming to The Knitting Experience! It is scheduled to be delivered in mid-December.

Noro took the 12 most popular colorways in his famous Kureyon line, produced a fingering weight wool, added nylon, and a gorgeous sock yarn was born.

Today, I met with the Noro sales rep - Jim - and ordered ALL 12 colors.

Enjoy the preview and I'll keep you posted on the delivery date.

Mesmerizing

Mesmerizing

Can't. Stop. Knitting.

The Citrus Yoke Pullover has me completely entranced. I am fascinated by its growth and development. You see, it is basically just a pretty tube.

IMG_2454
Yet, cleverly hidden between the lovely lace panels are evenly spaced increases. So the tube grows, both in length and width. Presumably, this is all to create room for the shoulders and sleeves, but I still feel like I am looking at a tube. I am completely disoriented and not sure from where the sleeves might sprout. But, I have faith.  And I am enjoying the process immensely. A few more rounds and I will know if the magic of knitting worked once again. (Come on, don't you just love the way you can be knitting forever on the oddest looking thing, then all of a sudden, you have a sweater!)

While I continue my rounds on the tube, let's see what others have been knitting.

Wendy sacrificed some of her precious time in Maine (she recently moved to TN and we miss her dearly) to spend with us on the Big Red Couch.  We worked on her Rogue together.
IMG_2452
And she had some spectacular socks to show off.  I believe these were from the sock class she took with Terri.
IMG_2451
Connie stopped by wearing her Jo Sharp shawl cardigan.
IMG_2414

Gorgeous isn't it? I've been dying to make it myself.  The yarn is Alpaca Kid Lustre.

Anna also made a Jo Sharp cardi using the same yarn.  I love the way it holds it shape and shows the stitches. I particularly like the 3/4 sleeves on this design.

IMG_2251
Mindy finished her hat and scarf set out of Malabrigo and I hear that she just completed her very first sock.  Yay Mindy!!!
IMG_2337
IMG_2339
Marcia showed me a neat winter twist on my Fun Drop Stitch Scarf pattern. I originally designed the scarf as a summer accessory.  She picked out a mohair ribbon, added a few stitches, and here is the result
IMG_2335
The fabric is incredibly light and airy.  One skein of Impression makes a scarf.

Teresa finished her Baby Pea Pod set out of Cascade's Pima Tencel.

IMG_2250
Don't you love the addition of the dragonflies? Lucky baby.

Alva astounded us with the most beautiful blanket that she created through a technique called Swedish weave.
IMG_2336

I leave you with a picture of utter adorableness.  Elizabeth brought her new puppy by to say hello.  Isn't that belly just too much!?! (I asked.  Peter said I can't have one. But, I can have a spinning wheel, so life isn't that bad.)

November Newsletter

I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving and are looking forward to the upcoming holidays. We have been very busy at the shop and have so many exciting things to share, that it is difficult to know where to begin.

First, we are thrilled to announce the launch of The Knitting Experience Café Online Store!

We know that you can't always make it to our Brunswick location to have tea on the Big Red Couch. Now, regardless of where you are, and what time of day it is, you will have access to all the gorgeous fiber, beautiful needles, and inspiring patterns, that fill our shelves. Just click here.

As a thank you for your support, a free gift is included with the first 50 orders, and every order over $50 ships for free! (In store pick up is also an option.)

For those who will be in the Brunswick area this coming Saturday, we have a special treat planned.  Designer and author, Heidi Boyd, will be at the shop on Sat. December 1, from 2:30-4pm signing copies of her most recent book, Soft and Simple Knits for Little Ones. Heidi has been kind enough to loan us many of the original works photographed for the book to give you a chance to see the pieces in person. Becka and I both have patterns featured among the 45 designs in the book, so we are particularly excited to be able to host this event.

To reserve a copy of Soft and Simple Knits, simply call the shop.  Or, you can purchase directly from our online store, and we'll have your book ready for you at the signing on Saturday.

Lastly, we have an exciting discount to offer on some very special Spunky Eclectic yarn. Amy, the artist and owner of Spunky Eclectic, introduced a color of the month program.  Each month, you will find that color offered at 15% OFF.  You only have a week left to snag a skein of Skinny Sock in Rebecca, November's color.  The Spunky color of the month is available through our online store, along with a number of other special discounts.

As you work on your holiday plans, don't forget to stop by to fill out your very own Holiday Wish List!  Complete a card with all your fiber desires, then send in your loved ones who are looking for the perfect gift just for you.

Happy Knitting!
Chesley

Announcing the launch of The Knitting Experience Café Online Store! When you can't join us on the Big Red Couch, but are in a desperate need of a fiber fix, we're now just a click away.  Or if it is the middle of the night and you are planning your next project, you can check out the yarns, patterns, needles, etc... that we have in-stock.  You can even request that we hold your order for in-store pick up! Or, for those shopping from further away, all orders over $50.oo ship for FREE! And the first 50 orders include a special free gift as a thank you.

The online store has been a dream of mine since we opened shop over two years ago.  For the past 6 months, it has been a constant effort of data entry, photography, and programming.

Lots and lots of programming. Peter has devoted most of his weekends and far more all-nighters than anyone should have to endure to get us up and running. Through it all, he has learned A LOT about fiber content, gauge, yarn weight, etc... . I, in turn, have learned just how little I know about computers. Luckily, even though I think he has wanted to curse me to the high heavens for my lack of database skills, Peter has restrained himself and only mumbles about my computer-illiteracy.  Then he VERY patiently shows me how it should be done.  I'm learning.  Really.  Progress is being made.

With all the work to get the online store up and running, many other areas of my life have been on hold.  Such as housecleaning.  God.  You do not want to see my house.  Or the mountains of laundry.  Cooking?  Domino's delivers.

But knitting?  Knitting has preserved my sanity.

And, let's be honest, it's about time Peter got his sweater.  The man deserves a sweater.  While pictures have been downloading and files copying, I have been knitting away on the sleeves.  The caps are within sight:

IMG_2443
And my grandmother's socks are growing
IMG_2450
We all know that my ability to resist casting on for a new project is, well, non-existent. So, last night, I started the Citrus Yoke Pullover from the Winter '07 Interweave Knits.  It starts with the neck and works down.  I am in love.  With the yarn.  With the stitch pattern.  And hopefully with the sweater.
IMG_2447
Now, I ask for your indulgence while I try a neat trick that Peter showed me.  Evidently I can link directly from the blog to the online store so you can see exactly what yarn, pattern, whatever, I'm talking about.  Too cool.

First, the yarn for the Citrus Yoke sweater. Oh, and the needles too.  The pattern for my grandmother's socks? Hee hee.  That was fun!

Psssst!

There is something new on our website. Can you find it?

The books are here!!

The books are here!!

I can hardly believe it.  They are here.  The books are actually here! Our first shipment of Heidi's beautiful book arrived today.

IMG_2299
I am so excited - I called Heidi immediately.  Right now, we're working on plans for a book signing party to be held on Sat. December 1st. Details to come.

In the meantime, anyone who has reserved a copy can stop by to pick it up (and start knitting!). If you'd like to reserve a copy, just call or email and I'll set one aside for you. Over the next few days, we'll be bringing in samples of the pieces from the book for you to see.

Progress

Progress

With all the craziness of the past few weeks, I haven't felt like I accomplished much in the knitting department, despite always having needles in my hand.  Today, I thought it was time to evaluate the status of recent projects.

There is my current favorite - and finished piece! - the cropped cardigan from Blue Sky Alpacas.

IMG_2179
It fits like a dream and was heavenly to knit.  Pure alpaca on size 11 needles. Ahhhhhhhh.

Next up is a new project I grabbed after visiting my grandparents.  Turns out my grandmother could use some thick socks to keep her feet warm.  Again, Blue Sky Alpacas to the rescue.  I don't think anyone could be cold with chunky alpaca/wool socks.
IMG_2182
This is how far I got last night while watching Desperate Housewives:
IMG_2199
During Knit at Night, I have been plugging away on the sleeves for Peter's sweater.  Thanks to Terri's brilliant suggestion of tying the correct sides together so I don't get mixed up AGAIN on which one I am supposed to be knitting, they have been growing.
IMG_2197

A few more repeats have been added to the Alpine Lace when quiet moments magically appear.

IMG_2200
And the zipper for my Rogue arrived this weekend!!!! Yay!!
IMG_2196
I'll be sewing this in by hand, so it waits for that thing people refer to as "free time."

I'm not the only one making progress in the knitting realm.

Patti finished her tangled yoke cardigan. Beautiful!
IMG_2187
IMG_2183
Bridget shared these adorable booties and the most incredible gnome:
IMG_2188
IMG_2190
Both Terri and Anna have been working on the magic loop method for knitting socks.  Terri created this mini-version in Spunky Eclectic:
IMG_2193
And Anna's in Lorna's Laces:
IMG_2191
Becka finished her first pair of socks ever and gave them to mom:

IMG_2136
Mary Ellen finished her first Hedgie - hee hee-
IMG_2130
And Mindy made the tiniest booties:
IMG_2131
And this doesn't count the multiple KALs being planned for the winter (details later) and the projects lined up to jump on the needles.

One of those is a pair of socks just for me out of a very special yarn.  Sara knew I couldn't make it to Amy's grand opening of the Spunky Eclectic shop in Lisbon so she got me a little present from that day.  Some beautiful Spunky sock yarn.
IMG_2202
I'm gonna have hot pink socks!!  Thanks Sara!

She wasn't the only one who knew how sorry I was to miss Amy's big day.  Scott brought me an early holiday gift:
IMG_2194
Luxurious roving in the Spunky Grand Opening colorway.  He knows how desperately I want to start spinning.  I think this is his way of pushing me over the wheel-buying cliff.  AAGGHHH... I'm falling and I can't get up. Thanks Scott!

Family time

Family time

Becka and I got to spend the weekend with our mom, visiting family.  In the process, we learned more about ourselves.

First, let me introduce our great-great uncle, Daniel Chesley:

IMG_2143
People often ask me how my parents came up with my name. Well, you are looking at him. (He's rather handsome, don't you think?) My older brother, Dan, was given his first name, and I got his last.

Uncle Dan, as he is known in the family, played an important role in raising my grandfather. While my grandparents were a bit shy about letting me take their pictures (for some reason, they suspected me of blogging intentions), I was able to capture photos of them from over 40 years ago.
IMG_2148 IMG_2146
My grandmother did let me take a picture of her surrounded by her most recent work, sweater after beautiful sweater. (Sorry, but that picture is for me, not the blog.)

Becka and I stayed up most of the night going over each sweater, over each perfect stitch, every flowing line, and realized that our knitting heritage extends beyond us, beyond our mother who taught us, to our grandmother whose stitches left us humbled by their beauty.

One day, my work may be as good.  In the meantime, I knit with thoughts of the generations before me and of those yet to come, whose fingers have, and will, make the same movements creating beauty, warmth, comfort, and love.

You shop, I shop

You shop, I shop

After the tremendous fun of the Early Bird Sale, I had to do some serious shopping to restock the shelves.  UPS and FedEx came with the first shipment of goodies. These boxes contain LOTS of Cascade and Debbie Bliss yarns.

IMG_2167
Lorna's Laces and Blue Sky Alpacas should be arriving next week.

The first wave of books also came. I was going to tell you about the arrival of the Winter issue of Interweave Knits last Thursday.
IMG_2169
But, as of this afternoon, we are sold out. If you see it at the bookstore, I highly recommend that you snatch up a copy - there are many must knits. Including a possible Knit Along to keep us busy this winter. Mindy and Mary Ellen had the brilliant idea to turn this Celtic Tote
Celtic_tote
into a Deployment KAL. Scott is going out on another deployment with the Navy starting after Thanksgiving, so they thought it would be fun and a good distraction to knit this gorgeous bag.  They inspired many others, and it has taken on a life of its own!

Back to the new books:
Some are restocks of books we have had before-
IMG_2170
Others are new and have been eagerly anticipated:

IMG_2176
Only one copy remains of Cat Bordhi's New Pathways for Sock Knitters. The rest were snatched up right out of the box! I think perhaps we scared the delivery guy by literally pouncing on the boxes.

And, we have a little therapy for your feet - sock yarn with aloe. Nothing like moisturizing your toes while you walk!
IMG_2177
Oh, before I forget, we'll be doing the Holiday Wish List again list year. Many of you have asked when the cards will be available.  The were printed today and you can pick one up at the shop anytime. For those who are wondering, "what the heck is she talking about?", the Holiday Wish List is our way of helping you fulfill your fiber fantasies, while making the holiday shopping easier on your loved ones.

Here's how it works.  You stop by, or call, or email your "wish list" (yarn, needles, books, gift certificates... you get the idea).  We file your list away until your loved one stops by (or calls - phone orders are easy and great for those living far away, wondering, "what can I get them? I know they knit, but what does that mean?").  We give them the list (and explain what dpns, worsted weight, and the such, are and help them find it).  Then, we keep track of what has come off the list.  Here's the strict part - no peeking! You are NOT allowed to check you card and see what people may or may not have gotten for you. It's all about the surprise.

Enjoy dreaming up your list!
