Today is a very special day at our house. Connor turns 9 today and gets to enjoy all the privileges of being the birthday boy. There are gifts to be opened, favorite foods at every meal, planning for a party with friends, and being at the center of attention of all those who love him. It is a wonderful day.
But for me, for Mom, is a little bittersweet. My oldest baby is 9 years old today. One short year from now, the numbers will click over and he'll be in double digits.
I know every mother goes through it, and at practically every birthday their children mark on the calendar. My own mother still exclaims in awe each time one of her kids turns a year older, that she just can't believe how quickly the time flies. Yet, somehow, knowing I am in such good company does not change the hint of sadness that plays at the edge of my heart today.
Even as I share his excitement, marvel at what an amazing boy he has become, there is a part of me still kissing the newborn baby, holding the chubby toddler's hands, sending him off to preschool, preparing for the first day of camp, and replaying endless other moments that have come before today.
Those moments are part of this wonderful person who I get to watch grow and change. While I am sorry to see them go, I know that so many more are ahead. And something tells me age 9 is going to be fantastic.
